It belongs to a suit like the jacket, but it is often neglected: the suit trousers. Yet the right fit of trousers completes the effect of an elegant suit. When buying off the rack, you often get trousers and a jacket in one package, but there are only a few body types for which the standard really fits well. As with a good jacket, we recommend having custom suit trousers made, taking your needs into account. We show you what matters when it comes to well-fitting trousers.
The right cut for your suit trousers
Similar to jackets, suit trousers also come in different fits, each with different characteristics. Which fit you should choose depends on your body type as well as your personal preferences. You should also consider the occasion for which you are buying the suit.
Slim Fit – modern and trend-conscious
This very body-hugging fit has become increasingly popular in recent years. The cut is very narrow and is characterized by tapered trouser legs, meaning they get narrower at the bottom. This cut looks particularly elegant on athletic, slender men.
Despite expectations, the Slim Fit offers a lot of freedom of movement, making it suitable for everyday wear. Here, the trouser legs can be cut a little shorter than usual, which emphasizes a youthful, sporty style. A sock can peek out and be used as a fashionable statement.
Regular Fit – classic and timeless
If you value timelessness and seriousness, we recommend the Regular Fit. It is considered an all-rounder, as it suits every body type and is suitable for all occasions. The trouser legs are cut straight, and the trousers have more room than with the close-fitting cut, yet the overall silhouette remains quite body-hugging. The trousers sit on the hips and should fit perfectly, especially on the thighs. Here's the rule: The length of the trouser legs should end halfway up the shoe heel.
Whether you need a suit for a very elegant occasion like a wedding or a reception, or you want to be suitably dressed for the office or client meetings, with the Regular Fit you are opting for a popular classic that exudes elegance and competence.
Comfort Fit – comfortable and custom-fit
With this cut, you choose the most comfortable trouser shape. The uncomplicated cut offers maximum wearing comfort, as the legs are quite wide and the trousers should generally sit on the hips rather than the waist. Nevertheless, even with the Comfort Fit, the trousers must be chosen to fit precisely, meaning they must not be too wide or too loose. Special attention should be paid to the trouser leg, which may form a small crease at the shoe, also known as a break.
This cut is particularly suitable for men with a stronger build. Many rely on this very comfortable cut, especially in everyday office life.
Determining the right trouser size for men
Of course, we take your measurements before making any custom trousers. To ensure a good fit, we determine the inseam length and the waist size. Only when both are cut to the correct length for you will the suit trousers fit optimally.
For the waist size, the waist circumference is measured. To ensure maximum comfort when walking, we measure the inseam length from the crotch to the floor.
We recommend writing down your measurements and carrying them with you, for example in your wallet or as a digital note on your phone. This way, even with spontaneous purchases, you can select the correct size and fit, and also track if and how your measurements have changed over time.
Size chart men's trousers (suit trousers, jeans, chinos)
The following table shows your correct trouser size. Choose between regular sizes, extra-long sizes, and short sizes.
Regular SizesIf your inseam is between 76 and 86 cm, you should choose a regular size. Your waist circumference should be between 70 and 117.5 cm.
|
Extra-Long SizesIf you are very tall and slender, you should choose an extra-long size. Here, the trouser legs are cut significantly longer while maintaining the same waist circumference.
|
Short Sizes
If you are rather short, we recommend a short size. Men with a slight belly also benefit from this cut. The trouser legs are cut unusually short here.
| Size (Width/Length) |
Waist Circumference 1 | Inseam 2 |
|---|---|---|
| 33/30 | 82.5-84.5 | 76 |
| 34/30 | 85-87 | 76 |
| 36/32 | 90-92 | 81 |
| 38/32 | 95.5-97.5 | 81 |
| 40/32 | 100.5-102.5 | 81 |
| 42/32 | 105.5-107.5 | 81 |
When do suit trousers fit well?
As you may know from jeans, the combination of length and width is used to determine the correct size for suit trousers, for example, W32/L34. But in addition to the correct ready-to-wear size, there are other factors that make for a good fit.
For example, the trousers should fit snugly at the seat without being restrictive. This also means that no undesirable creases should be visible or the trousers should not pull down. The lowest point of the trouser leg – the so-called trouser break – should just touch the shoe; with some cuts, it can even be a few centimeters shorter here. If the suit trousers are too long, the suit as a whole appears inelegant and too large.
5 mistakes you should avoid when wearing suit trousers
The suit trousers are too long.
Current fashion forgives a slightly too short cut, but with trousers that are too long, folds at the seat and on the trouser leg quickly catch the eye. This does not look elegant and a little as if you borrowed the suit from someone. Therefore: have the trousers shortened by a tailor you trust.
Wearing white socks with suit trousers.
Colorfully conspicuous socks with a suit can be a bold fashion statement. However, white socks or stockings are a major faux pas. They look very sporty and ruin the elegance of a suit. Therefore: preferably only combine white socks with sneakers and opt for knee-high socks that match the color.
Bulging trouser pockets.
A high-quality suit deserves a little care and love. This includes not storing sharp objects like keys or wallets in your trouser pockets. They can ruin delicate fabrics and even cause holes. Stretched-out trouser pockets are difficult to repair, so you should find another storage solution.
Combining belts and suspenders.
Many men want to ensure their trousers stay in place and therefore opt for both a belt and suspenders. However, both visually overload the trousers and are not even necessary if you pay attention to the correct fit beforehand.
Overly Sporty Accessories
You can combine jewelry and watches with an elegant suit; a pocket square or a matching tie can also enrich your style. However, you should avoid wearing a sporty backpack or gym bag. Even sports shoes usually don't look good with a complete suit. Opt for classics like leather shoes, a discreet shoulder bag, or forgo accessories to be on the safe side.
