The fabric is soft and flowing, the color exactly matches your expectations, but for some reason the new shirt fits as if it belonged to someone else? The wrong cut can disfigure even the finest men's shirt. But what should you look out for? We would like to show you how to determine the right fit for you and why investing in a made-to-measure shirt can pay off for years to come.

Determine the right shirt size with the right fit

The cut of a shirt is also referred to as the fit. This is essentially determined by two factors: the figure of the wearer and their personal preferences. The information on cuts and fits can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but there are essentially four cuts, which we also use to distinguish Maßkonfektion C. Weilert :

Super Slim: very slim fit, strongly waisted

Body fit: slim fit, waisted

Regular fit: modern fit, slightly waisted

Comfort Fit: normal fit, not waisted

To ensure that you feel comfortable in your shirt in every situation, we recommend that you take precise measurements. In addition to the fit, the length of the sleeves, the width of the shoulders and the overall length of the shirt are also important. If you wear shirts frequently, we recommend having a custom-made shirt made to your exact specifications.

These fits are available for shirts

The challenge when buying a shirt is to choose the right cut for you. This is mainly determined by your physique, but the occasion and personal preference also play a role. We recommend the Comfort Fit for men with a sturdy build, the Regular Fit is very suitable for a normal build and those who are very slim can choose between Super Slim Fit, Body Fit and Regular Fit.

Super Slim - the high-waisted cut for body shaping

This fit is also called X-Slim or Extra Slim by some manufacturers and is aimed at very slim men who prefer a skin-tight fit for their shirts. With this very slim cut, the body proportions are clearly accentuated, including the waist, arms and shoulders. This very sporty look is ideal for leisure wear or as casual evening wear. It is rarely chosen for very festive occasions or business suits.

Body fit - the tailored cut for a sporty look

This cut, which is also very form-fitting, is also known as slim fit or tight fit and is a favorite among slim men. It creates a slim silhouette and still offers some room for movement. The body-fit shirt should always fit close to the body without cutting into the armpits or showing too much. This makes body fit a good choice for business shirts or for shirts to be worn at festive occasions such as weddings. Combined with jeans or chinos, the slim fit shirt can also be easily integrated into everyday life.

Modern Fit - the slightly tailored cut for a smooth line

Modern fit or regular fit refers to a straight, very classic cut. The fit is slightly tapered and therefore well suited to men with a normal figure. As the chest and waist are cut to roughly the same width, slim men who prefer a more comfortable fit also like the Modern Fit. Shirts with this fit can be worn anywhere: with a business suit, in your free time, at festive occasions and weddings.

Comfort fit - straight cut with a classic flair

This is probably the most classic cut for a men's shirt, which is why it is often called Classic Fit. Shirts with this fit fall very loosely and are particularly flattering on men with a strong build. The shirt flares out a little above the belt, so a tummy bulge can also be easily concealed. This fit is a popular choice for all occasions and is perfect for both leisure and festive occasions.

Which size is right for my shirt?

Once you have chosen the right fit, you should also make sure you have the right neck circumference or collar size to ensure a good fit. For example, a size 40/41 shirt corresponds to a neck circumference of 40 to 41 centimetres. In combination with the right fit, you will find a shirt that really suits you and your style.

Please note that the designations of the fits can be slightly different for different brands. Where one brand's Modern Fit is barely fitted, another brand's may be more so. For a truly perfect fit, we recommend investing in a hand-tailored shirt. This can be worn on any occasion and will give you style and elegance.

When does a shirt not fit?

There are several signs that indicate a poor fit. If you are unsure whether the shirt you have chosen really fits well when trying it on, we recommend that you pay attention to the following:

  1. The shirt stretches around the stomach. It's better to go for a wider cut so that the shirt doesn't constrict you when you're sitting or standing. You should therefore carry out the fit test every time you try on a shirt.
  2. The shirt pinches when you stretch your arms over your head. Even slim-fit shirts or X-slim shirts should always offer enough room for you to move freely. Go for a larger size or a wider cut if your shirt slips out of your trousers when you stretch, gets stuck in your armpits or you can't stretch your arms out comfortably at all.
  3. The shirt looks too short. Even if you don't want to wear the shirt tucked into your trousers, it must have a minimum length. The hem should just reach the middle of the buttocks, no further.
  4. The shirt is too tight at the back when bending over. When trying on the shirt: move around a lot! This will quickly show you whether the shirt is the right size and fit to accompany you in everyday life.
  5. The sleeves are too long or too short. Often forgotten, but essential for a perfect fit is the length of the sleeves. If your arms hang down, the sleeves should reach no further than the tips of your thumbs.
