The fabric is soft and flowing, the color is exactly what you wanted, but for some reason, the new shirt fits as if it belonged to someone else? The wrong cut can ruin even the most elegant men's shirt. But what should you look out for? We would like to show you how to determine the right fit for you and why investing in a custom-made shirt can pay off for years to come.

Determining the correct shirt size with the right fit

When talking about the cut of a shirt, we also refer to the fit. This is essentially determined by two factors: the wearer's figure and their personal preferences. Information on cuts and fits may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but there are essentially four cuts that we at C. Weilert also use for our made-to-measure clothing:

Super Slim: very slim fit, strongly tailored

Body Fit: slim fit, tailored

Regular fit: modern fit, slightly tailored

Comfort Fit: normal fit, not tailored

To ensure that you feel comfortable in your shirt in every situation, we recommend that you have it measured accurately. In addition to the fit, the length of the sleeves, the width of the shoulders, and the overall length of the shirt are also important. If you wear shirts frequently, we recommend having a shirt made to measure according to your exact specifications.

These shirt fits are available

The challenge when buying shirts is choosing the right cut for you. This is mainly determined by your body type, but the occasion and your personal preference also play a role. We recommend the Comfort Fit for men with a larger build, the Regular Fit is ideal for a normal build, and those who are very slim can choose between Super Slim Fit, Body Fit, and Regular Fit.

Super Slim the strongly tailored cut for emphasizing the body

This fit is also referred to as X-Slim or Extra Slim by some manufacturers and is aimed at very slim men who prefer a skin-tight fit for their shirts. This very narrow cut clearly emphasizes the body's proportions, not only at the waist but also in the arms and shoulders. This very sporty look is ideal for leisure activities or as casual evening wear. It is rarely chosen for very festive occasions or business suits.

Body Fit the tailored cut for a sporty look

This cut, which is also very form-fitting, is also known as slim fit or tight fit and is a favorite among slim men. It creates a narrow silhouette while still offering some room for movement. The body-fit shirt should always fit snugly without cutting into the armpits or showing through too much. This makes body fit a good choice for business shirts or shirts to be worn on festive occasions such as weddings. Combined with jeans or chinos, the slim-fit shirt can also be easily integrated into everyday wear.

Modern Fit the slightly tailored cut for a relaxed silhouette

Modern Fit or Regular Fit refers to a straight, very classic cut. The fit is minimally tailored and therefore well suited for men with a normal figure. Since the chest and waist are cut to be approximately the same width, slim men who prefer a more comfortable fit also like to choose Modern Fit. Shirts with this fit can be worn anywhere: with a business suit, during leisure time, at festive occasions, and weddings.

Comfort Fit straight cut with classic flair

This is probably the most classic cut for a men's shirt, which is why it is often called a classic fit. Shirts with this fit are very loose and particularly flattering for men with a sturdy build. The shirt billows slightly above the waist, which is a great way to conceal a bit of a belly. This fit is a popular choice for all occasions and looks great both for leisure and festive occasions.

What size is right for my shirt?

Once you have chosen the right fit, you should also make sure you have the right neck size or collar size for a good fit. For example, a shirt in size 40/41 corresponds to a neck size of 40 to 41 centimeters. Combined with the right fit, you will find a shirt that really suits you and your style.

Please note that the names of the fits may vary slightly between different brands. What one brand calls a modern fit may be less tailored than another brand's modern fit. For a truly perfect fit, we recommend investing in a hand-tailored shirt. This can be worn on any occasion and will give you style and elegance.

When is a shirt not suitable?

There are a few signs that indicate a poor fit. If you are unsure whether the shirt you have chosen really fits well when you try it on, we recommend that you pay attention to the following:

  1. The shirt is tight around the stomach. In this case, it is better to choose a looser fit so that the shirt does not constrict you when sitting or standing. You should therefore perform the sitting test every time you try on a shirt.
  2. The shirt gets stuck when you raise your arms above your head. Even slim-fit or X-slim shirts should always offer enough space so that you can move freely. Choose a larger size or a wider cut if your shirt slips out of your pants when you stretch, gets stuck under your armpits, or you can't even stretch your arms comfortably.
  3. The shirt looks too short. Even if you don't want to tuck the shirt into your pants, it must have a minimum length. The hem should reach just to the middle of the buttocks, no further.
  4. When bending over, the shirt is too tight at the back. When trying on clothes, move around a lot! This will help you quickly determine whether the shirt is the right size and fit for everyday wear.
  5. The sleeves are too long or too short. Often overlooked, but essential for a perfect fit is the length of the sleeves. With your arms hanging down, the sleeves should reach no further than the tips of your thumbs.
