The fabric is soft and flowing, the color is exactly what you envisioned, but for some reason, the new shirt fits as if it belongs to someone else? The wrong cut can spoil even the finest men's shirt. But what should you look for? We want to show you how to determine the right fit for you and why investing in a custom-made shirt can pay off for years.
Determining the right shirt size with the right fit
When it comes to the cut of a shirt, we also speak of the fit. This is essentially determined by two factors: the wearer's figure and their personal preferences. The specifications for cuts and fits can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but there are essentially four cuts that we at C. Weilert custom tailoring also distinguish:
Super Slim: very narrow fit, strongly tapered
Body Fit: narrow fit, tapered
Regular Fit: modern fit, slightly tapered
Comfort Fit: normal fit, not tapered
So that you feel comfortable in your shirt in every situation, we recommend precise measurements. Because in addition to the fit, the length of the sleeves, the width of the shoulders, and the overall length of the shirt are also important. If you wear shirts frequently, we recommend having a custom-made shirt made exactly to your wishes.
These fits are available for shirts
The challenge when buying shirts is choosing the right cut for you. This is mainly determined by body type, but the occasion and personal preference also play a role. For men with a strong build, we recommend the Comfort Fit, for a normal build, the Regular Fit is very suitable, and for very slim men, you can choose between Super Slim Fit, Body Fit, and Regular Fit.
Super Slim – the strongly tapered cut for emphasizing the body
This fit is also called X-Slim or Extra Slim by some manufacturers and is aimed at very slim men who prefer a skin-tight fit for their shirt. With this very narrow cut, the body proportions are clearly emphasized, not only the waist but also the arm and shoulder areas. This very sporty look is excellent for leisure wear or as casual evening wear. It is rarely chosen for very festive occasions or business suits.
Body Fit – the tapered cut for a sporty look
This equally body-hugging cut is also known as Slim Fit or Tight Fit and is a favorite among slim men. It creates a narrow silhouette while still offering some room for movement. The Body Fit shirt should always fit snugly against the body without cutting into the armpits or showing significant creases. This makes Body Fit a good choice for business shirts or for shirts to be worn on festive occasions such as weddings. Combined with jeans or chinos, the Slim Fit shirt can also be easily integrated into everyday wear.
Modern Fit – the slightly tapered cut for a clean line
Modern Fit or Regular Fit describes a straight, very classic cut. The fit is minimally tapered and therefore well suited for men with a normal figure. Since the chest and waist are cut approximately equally wide, slim men who prefer a bit more comfort also like to choose Modern Fit. Shirts with this fit can be worn everywhere: with a business suit, in leisure time, at festive occasions, and weddings.
Comfort Fit – straight cut with classic flair
This is probably the most classic cut for a men's shirt, which is why it is often called Classic Fit. Shirts with this fit are very loose and flatter men with a strong build in particular. The shirt bunches slightly above the belt, which can also conceal a stomach. This fit is popular for all occasions and convinces both in leisure time and at festive events.
What size is right for my shirt?
Once you have chosen the right fit, you should also pay attention to a suitable neck circumference or collar size for a good fit. For example, a size 40/41 shirt corresponds to a neck circumference of 40 to 41 centimeters. In combination with the right fit, you will find a shirt that truly suits you and your style.
Please note that the fit designations may vary slightly between different brands. Where a Modern Fit may be barely tapered for one brand, it may be more so for another. For a truly perfect fit, we recommend investing in a handmade custom shirt. This can be worn on any occasion and gives you style and elegance.
When does a shirt not fit?
There are some signs that indicate a poor fit. If you are unsure during the fitting whether the chosen shirt really fits well, we recommend that you pay attention to the following:
- The shirt is tight around the stomach. Then choose a wider cut so that the shirt does not restrict you when sitting or standing. Therefore, you should always perform a sitting test during each fitting.
- The shirt bunches up when you stretch your arms overhead. Even slim-fit shirts or X-slim shirts should always offer enough space so that you can move freely. Choose a larger size or a wider cut if your shirt slips out of your pants when stretching, bunches in the armpits, or if you cannot comfortably stretch your arms at all.
- The shirt seems too short. Even if you don't want to tuck the shirt into your pants, it must have a minimum length. The hem should just reach the middle of the buttocks, no further.
- When bending over, the shirt is too tight in the back. During the fitting: Move around extensively! This way, you will quickly notice whether the shirt has the right size and fit to accompany you in everyday life.
- The sleeves are too long or too short. Often forgotten, but essential for a perfect fit is the length of the sleeves. When your arms are hanging down, the sleeves should reach a maximum of your thumb tips.
