Castagna, the chestnut: the forests of Piedmont in autumn, when the foliage looks almost black and only the chestnut shells still show a warm brown. Alongside it, a blue like the sky above, vivid and clear. Brown and blue is one of the few color combinations that needs no explanation. It works here because Madder takes the sheen off both colors, the sheen that otherwise makes the pairing fail.

The apricot-colored outline around each diamond is why the pattern does not look harsh. It bridges the two colors instead of setting them against each other: a detail you do not consciously notice, but whose absence would be immediately apparent. Of the seven, this is the most versatile, with navy blue, medium gray, brown and green, and with white or light blue shirts.
