The Oxford is the most formal of all lacings: closed, with the quarters stitched beneath the vamp, which give the silhouette its clean, unbroken line. No shoe pairs more formally with a suit – and none is a more natural choice for formal occasions.
Goodyear welted: a welt running all the way around joins the upper, the insole and the outsole with a seam that can be opened again. The shoe can be resoled and so becomes a companion over the years rather than a consumable – and it adapts further to the foot each time you wear it.
