The sun-scorched fields of Tuscany in late summer, just before the harvest: this ochre is their light. A color missing from most wardrobes because people rarely dare to reach for it, and one that seldom works in shiny silk because it turns too yellow there. That does not happen with Ancient Madder. The matte, powdery finish keeps the shade earthy, almost like fired clay.

The blue medallions provide balance. Up close, they are finely drawn, with a ring of dots and a pale center; from three meters away, they form a quiet pattern. That is precisely what separates a good pattern from a conspicuous one: it works from a distance and rewards a second look. Safest with navy blue and medium gray, most beautiful with brown and olive.
