The baked earth of Apulia, arranged in squares like the floors of its courtyards: terracotta is the shade between red and brown, and it solves a problem many people know. Red is often too emphatic, burgundy often too heavy. This ground is neither, and this is precisely where Ancient Madder shows what it is for. The same color in shiny silk would simply be red.

The pattern has a strict structure, framed squares in neat rows with small rosettes between them. That order keeps the warm color from seeming arbitrary; the tie looks composed rather than cheerful. That is the difference between an accent and a misstep. With navy blue and medium gray, especially good with brown and olive.
